Finding Connection Through Sign Language: Braydon's Journey
In recognition of International Week of Deaf People
Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, Sept. 16, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- During International Week of Deaf People from September 21-27, 2026, DeafBlind Ontario Services (DBOS) is celebrating Deaf culture, raising awareness about accessibility, and recognizing the contributions of Deaf individuals in communities across Ontario.
This year, we're sharing the story of Braydon, a 21-year-old who is Deaf and supported by DBOS. His experiences highlight the importance of accessible communication, meaningful community connections, and the power of self-advocacy.
For Braydon, communication is an important part of everyday life. His preferred method of communication is American Sign Language (ASL). Having access to interpreters and support from DBOS' Communication Support Professionals (CSPs) helps ensure Braydon can communicate clearly and participate fully in his community.
When he's not advocating for accessibility, Braydon enjoys spending time with friends, socializing, staying active through swimming and baseball, and playing video games.
Since moving into a DBOS Supported Living Home earlier this year, Braydon has benefited from the support of our Community Support Professionals (CSPs) who assist with communication and daily living. Being surrounded by people who communicate in ASL has strengthened his sense of connection and belonging.
Technology plays an important role in helping Braydon stay connected and independent. He uses his phone regularly and relies on alerting devices that vibrate to wake him up in the morning. At home, flashing alert systems notify him when someone is at the door. These tools help ensure he can access information and navigate daily life more independently.
Braydon believes strongly in the importance of self-advocacy and accessible communication.
"I will advocate for myself when it comes to accessibility. I value clear communication," says Braydon.
Braydon's experience reflects the realities many Deaf individuals face when communication supports are not readily available. Over the years, he has advocated for access to interpreters in healthcare settings, virtual meetings, and other important situations where communication is essential.
Like many Deaf people, Braydon has faced barriers in his community.
"There were times when no one knew how to sign," he says. "I felt isolated and frustrated because I didn't have access to information."
His experience highlights why awareness and accessibility matter. When communication barriers exist, people can be left out of conversations, opportunities, and important information.
When asked what change he would like to see, Braydon's answer is simple:
"I wish more people would learn to sign."
As part of International Week of Deaf People, Braydon plans to attend a Deaf flag-raising event in Peterborough, ON and spend time connecting with friends and members of the Deaf community.
